York Drag Way Report

Inter Club Series Round 3

Round 3 of the Inter club challenge took place on Sunday 26th August, at York Dragway.

The turn out was very good, the weather superb and a good crowd also out in force.

Morning qualifying saw new member Darren Peart out in his Manta V8 with an incredible 11.9s 122mph run. This car has a 5.0l engine, plus nitrous, and is road legal!

This time was beating that of the twin engined Renault 5 turbo, until that car went even quicker at 11.7s. Once qualifying was over, Darren was in 2nd place for the eliminators. Dennis Tighe managed 5th with a 14.3s 97mph run in his WRX, and Simon Skidmore had a 14.5s run in the GTI-r, which had a slight problem.

In the 2wd class, Andy Nicholls once again was quickest with a low boost run of 13.3s 114mph. Damain ward was having fun with his 330bhp rwd Cosworth as well, having a 14.1s 110mph run. Paul Hanson managed a 14.9s run, not bad when you consider it’s a Transit van! (With Cosworth turbo engine and running gear!)

John Oakes managed a credible 14.93s 96mph in his auto Porsche 928 S2.

Finally Darren Harvey had an impressive 14.89s run in his Mk1 Escort (nitrous).

                                                                                Qualifying times

4wd-Darren Peart 11.9s 122mph (2wd with nitrous), Dennis Tighe 14.3s 97mph Subaru WRX, Simon Skidmore GTI-R 14.5s 92mph.

2wd- Andy Nicholls 13.3s 114mph, Damian Ward 14.1s 110mph, Darren Harvey 14.89s 90mph, John Oakes 14.93s 96mph, Paul Hanson 14.9s 96mph.

The afternoon eliminators are head-to head, with first across the line to win, rather than best time!  This saw Darren and his Manta head to head in the semi-final against the 450bhp Capri Cosworth 4x4 that has won so many events. Finally a success for the 200 plus club, as Darren beat him across the line, and also on time, with 12.03s to his 12.3s! Darren went on to win the final and secure a superb win with a 12.26s time!

In the 2wd class, Andy Nicholls managed another fine 13.3s @ 113mph run, before winning the final against another Cossy, this time with a superb 12.87s 115mph against a losing 13.87s run!

Another great event, our first win in the 4wd class, and another 2wd win for Andy!

Simon Skidmore also won a trophy for fastest reaction time at 0.47s! This is likely to win him a £750 Nitrous kit at the end of the series!

At the final round on Sept 23rd, there will be the presentations for the class winners overall, and also the Club trophy, which we may have a chance of winning. However most of our club cars fall into the last two classes, X and T, we don’t usually have many entrants in the smaller c.c. Classes/normally aspirated etc.
