Well Lane Turbo Centre July 1st 2001

The 200 plus club held its second rolling road shootout at the excellent Well lane turbo centre, Batley, on Sunday 1st July.

A very warm and humid day maybe affected power slightly, but an enjoyable day was had by all.

Results as follows: (flywheel figures)

 

Front Wheel Drive

Chris Mann Rover Coupe Turbo

Mods: low compression forged pistons, hybrid turbo, mongoose, Ramair filter, Apexi boost control.

Expected: 210bhp

Result: 212bhp, 200ft/lb torque.

 Comments: expected as charge air temp hit 76 degrees c! Only ran 14-15psi. Chargecooler required for summer!

Andy Robinson Rover Coupe Turbo

Mods: std pistons, Magnex exhaust with de-cat, cone filter, Apexi boost control, 14psi boost.

Expected: never tested

Result: 212bhp 

Comments: pleased!

Ian Blundell Ford Escort RS turbo

Mods: 1905cc conversion, stage 3 head, paddle clutch, mongoose exhaust.

Expected: 200bhp

Result: 194bhp

 Comments: didn't hold full boost and dodgy injectors that need attention.

Jason Davies Rover Coupe Turbo

Mods: low compression forged pistons, full exhaust with de-cat, cone filter, Blitz boost control, 14.3 psi boost.

Expected: 210bhp

Result: 216bhp, 201ft/lb torque.

 Comments: pleased!

Gary Holland Rover Vitesse Turbo

Mods: standard pistons, chip upgrade, 15psi boost, de-cat, exhaust, and filter.

Expected: 240bhp

Result: 195bhp 

Comments: didn't hit 15psi boost, only made 11psi

Gavin Mclaren Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo

Mods: standard apart from exhaust system.

Expected: 220bhp? Never tested

Result: 216bhp

Comments: was hoping for a touch more!

Steven Lau Rover Coupe Turbo

Mods:  M-Build stage 2 boost upgrade, mongoose, de-cat, filter.

Expected: 210bhp

Result: 183bhp. 

Comments: disappointed, boost dropped off to 9psi.

Mike Taverner Rover 416 Turbo

Mods: low compression forged pistons, full exhaust with de-cat, cone filter, Unichip, water/methanol injection, hybrid T25 turbo.

Expected: 230bhp

Result: 252bhp, 238ft/lb torque.

 Comments: pleased! Hybrid T3 turbo next!

Rear Wheel Drive  

John Oakes Porsche 928 S2

Mods: standard 4.7l V8 with 170k miles on clock! 16 years old

Expected: 310bhp

Result: 301bhp, 300ft/lb torque. 

Comments: well chuffed!

Rob Bagwell Nissan 300 ZX Turbo

Mods: standard.

Expected: never tested.

Result: 259bhp. 

Comments: Oh dear!

Damian Ward Ford Sierra Sapphire Cosworth 2wd

Mods:  chip upgrade, hybrid turbo, full 330BHP conversion.

Expected: 330bhp

Result: 299bhp

 Comments: hit 22psi boost then dropped off to 16psi. New actuator!

Mike Tierney Ford Sierra Cosworth

Mods:  Stage 1 upgrade to 270bhp

Expected: 270bhp

Result: 269bhp.

 Comments: Great! Good guess!

Gordon Ray Opel Manta turbo

Mods: 2.0l Vauxhall 16v turbo with Full engine management system, throttle bodies, boost control, fuel controller.

Expected: 300bhp

Result: 302bhp, 300ft/lb torque.

 Comments: expected!

Michael Canny Toyota MR2 Turbo

Mods: Various modifications, running 16psi boost.

Expected: 263bhp

Result: 265bhp.

 Comments: pleased! 2psi boost less boost than used before! Gained 2bhp and loads of torque thanks to Octane booster!

Jason Croft Toyota MR2 Turbo

Mods: exhaust, filter, and boost upgrade.

Expected: never tested.

Result: 261bhp.

 Comments: chuffed!

Doug Scriven Escort Estate 4x4 Cosworth

Mods: stage 2 boost upgrade, Escort Cosworth 4x4 engine and transmission!

Expected: 270bhp.

Result: 301bhp.

 Comments: boost wound up 2 or 3 times but pinking badly!

Paul Birdi Nissan Pulsar GTI-R

Mods: exhaust, HKS filter, boost control, 1 bar boost.

Expected: never tested.

Result: 282bhp, 280ft/lb torque.

 Comments: very pleased, needs bigger brakes now!

 

Legan Ng Ford Escort Cosworth

Mods: Magnex exhaust system.

Expected: 220bhp.

Result: 235bhp.

 Comments: very pleased!

Mods: full engine rebuild, forged pistons, HKS boost control, Apexi fuel control, HKS head gasket, uprated fuel pump etc.

Overall another great day out, with a good turnout. It only cost £15 per person instead of the usual £55 charge for a power plot!

Afterwards there was a drive onto the local bowling centre for a few drinks (soft of course!) in the glorious sunshine of sunny Huddersfield!
