| Acceptable Use Policy |
You are very welcome as a visitor to my humble place on the web. I really am glad that you called in here. Yes, friend, there's only you and I here (and okay, I'll let you in on a secret, even I may have "left the building"). So, in fact you may be here all alone as a guest in my web home.
Now just as I'm the sort of person who lets trusted people roam around my bricks and mortar home unsupervised, so I'm glad to have you here, roaming around my web pages unsupervised. I'm glad, because I know you are the sort of person that I can trust.
But, dear friend, some of the people who have come here before you have proved themselves far from worthy of the trust I am placing in you. People have taken away all sorts of souvenirs from here. And really that puts me in a very odd position. You see, on the one hand, I'm very glad that people like my stuff enough to want to keep it, but on the other hand it really has been rather impolite of them to take my stuff and use it as if it was theirs.
And it's because of those people - the sort who like what I've done, but who have so little respect for me and my feelings (let alone my rights) that they think just because they found something here, it's finder's keepers - that I've had to create some house rules.
If you are the sort of person who respects others, and knows how to conduct yourself with courtesy when you're on someone else's patch, then these house rules won't restrict you in any way. On the other hand, if these house rules are more than you can bear, then perhaps you'd be happier at another web-site: just click here and on the next screen, just type your particular interests into the box and click on the appropriate button to be shown a list of places where you'll feel right at home.
| 1) VIEWING AND PRINTING
OUT THE CONTENTS OF THIS SITE
I am happy for you to view the content of this web site. If you like it sufficiently, you are welcome to print it out and keep the printed copy, but only for your personal use, not for redistribution in any form. |
| 2) LINKING TO THIS SITE
I am happy for you to incorporate links to any page of my web-site in your work. (For technical reasons, you should not link to the graphics at my web site, or anyone else's either. "What are these technical reasons?" someone asked me. Well, first from my point of view - if you link to a graphic here then that uses my server's bandwidth, when really you should be using your own. Second, from your point of view, I might delete the file, or keep the name but change the content; either of those could change the look of your website without warning.) |
| 3) LIMITS FOR REUSE OF
ANY MATERIAL FROM THIS WEB SITE IN YOUR OWN WORK
If you want to use any part of my web-site in anything you are doing, then follow this plan: a - "fair use") If and only if you are creating a piece of work which refers to this web-site in a context which falls within normally understood categories of "fair use" you are permitted, without further reference to me, to incorporate a maximum of five computer files (or extracts from files) from my website in any individual piece of your work, provided that such inclusions do not constitute more than 20% of the total of the relevant individual piece of your work (by any appropriate assessment). b - other use) If you are hoping to use ANY of my text, graphics, or anything else at this web-site in your own work, then you must obtain my explicit consent for each individual item you want to use before you incorporate any of my work into yours. (I've never refused any courteous and legitimate request for the use of individual items before, so please do ask, but please note that I never grant any blanket permission to copy whole sections of my work: if you are building a web-site, then it's up to you to do your own research and development.) c - miscellaneous) In connection with a and b above, it is important that you understand that the copyright with some of the items at my web site belongs with other people who have been kind enough to permit me the licence to use those items. I have no right to grant you permission to use those items. You must contact the original copyright owners for that, just like I had to. Such items are always indicated appropriately. d) Under no circumstances whatever are you allowed to copy any of the content of this web-site (other than as defined at "a" above) with the intention of making financial or similar gain from doing so. Incorporating my work at any web-site that attempts to make a profit for the proprietor of that web-site will immediately and irrevocably void any permission that might have been granted to use my work. I want you to be very clear about this. I am not creating a web-site in order to make money for myself; therefore you should not derive any financial benefit from my work either. Specifically, you may not make money from the sale of my work. Equally specifically, you may not use my work to attract people to your web site so that you can make money out of them in some other way. |
| 4) YOUR DUTIES TO THE
AUTHOR OF THIS WEBSITE
What you must promise to do before I will consider giving you permission to use anything from this web-site in your work (and of course, therefore, what you must actually do if I do give permission!): a - If your work is on the internet or equivalent electronically-based media, then there must be a hyperlink back to my web-site on each web-page or equivalent electronic document of yours that uses something from my web-site. b - If your work is in printed form, then there must be a reference to the URL of the relevant part of my web site within the bibliography of each of your documents that uses information from my web-site. c - You must certify that you will never attempt to make money from my work, and that my work will not be used to support indirectly any effort of any description on your part to make any money. d - You must certify that your reuse of my work will not be in a form that could be considered offensive or pornographic, either in full or in part. |
| Finally, I think I've answered all the usual questions you might have, but if you cannot determine how to proceed from the information given above, then ask me. |
| All of this is in fact pretty standard stuff. Even if other web-sites don't spell it out like I have been forced to, you should still treat their authors with at least this much respect. |
This policy for
acceptable use is effective as from August 10, 2001 17:49:55 +0100 and supersedes all previous versions.
If you use, or want to use, something from this site under the terms of this
policy, you are well-advised to make and keep a printed copy of this page.

The following information is specifically directed to any and every person or organisation who may want to send unsolicited commercial email (colloquially known as "spam" or "junk email") to any of the email addresses given on the pages at this web site. The following information is effective from 12 September 1994. IT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE FOR YOU TO "HARVEST" E-MAIL ADDRESSES FROM THE PAGES AT THIS WEB-SITE. |
|||||||||
| Statement 1: Unsolicited
commercial email is not welcomed by the owner of this web site.
I can't imagine that isn't clear, but if not, here is an interpretation of that statement. NONE OF THE INFORMATION AT THIS WEBSITE IS INTENDED TO CONSTITUTE A REQUEST FOR YOU TO SEND ME UNSOLICITED COMMERCIAL EMAIL. DO NOT SEND UNSOLICITED COMMERCIAL E-MAIL TO ANY EMAIL ADDRESS CONTAINED ON ANY PAGE WHICH IS PART OF THIS WEB SITE. IF YOU ARE IN DOUBT AS TO WHETHER SOMETHING YOU ARE CONSIDERING SENDING FALLS INTO THE CATEGORY OF "UNSOLICITED COMMERCIAL EMAIL" THEN THE FOLLOWING WILL ASSIST YOU: QUESTION 1. DO YOU HAVE IN YOUR POSSESSION SOME DOCUMENT WHICH PROVES THAT I HAVE ASKED YOU TO SEND ME INFORMATION WITHIN THE PAST SIXTY DAYS? QUESTION 2. IS THE COMMUNICATION DESIGNED TO ADVISE ME ABOUT ANY GOODS AND/OR SERVICES YOU ARE OFFERING (EITHER FOR YOUR OWN BENEFIT OR ON SOMEONE ELSE'S BEHALF) - WHETHER THERE IS ANY DIRECT OR INDIRECT CHARGE FOR THESE GOODS AND/OR SERVICES OR NOT? Now compare your answers with the table below
If still in doubt, then do not send your email - if you don't know what your intentions are, how on earth would I be able to tell? |
|||||||||
| Statement 2: Unsolicited
commercial email will be interpreted by the owner of this web-site as an
invitation to do work for you, unless you specify explicitly that it is
not.
The owner of this web-site is a well-educated individual who chooses to supplement his income by offering professional services, one of which is proof-reading. Any email which is received, but which is not acceptable as defined immediately above, will be taken to be an invitation to proof-read the text of the email, and make constructive comments about it. The only exception to this will be emails that start with the words "This is not an invitation to proof read the following text." on a separate line. (You should be advised that my email software automatically deletes all such messages.) Because this information is clearly displayed at the web-site and easily reached from every part of it, it is reasonable for me to conclude that you have read it. I may decline to take up your invitation, in which case I will not reply. (If you do not hear from me within 7 days, you may safely assume that I have decided not to proof-read your work, and you will have to find someone else to do it.) If I am available to proof-read your composition, my standard rate for doing this is £1.25 per word or part thereof, and £500 per graphic image file, subject to a minimum charge of £75. All amounts quoted are in Sterling, the currency of the United Kingdom, and settlement must be made in that currency. If it is necessary for me to contact you by telephone in connection with this contract, you will accept the charges for any such call. Similarly, you will pay postage for my report. After I advise you of the cost, you must settle the account within 14 days. I assume that you are acting with integrity when sending me the information to proof-read, and would not be attempting to trick me into working for nothing. If it becomes obvious that you are attempting to defraud me by getting me to work with no intention of paying me for it, then naturally such conduct will be reported to the relevant authorities. Sending an unsolicited commercial email (as defined above) to the owner of this web site constitutes irrevocable acceptance of these terms and conditions. |
