Mediaeval Monuments

During the mediaeval period, from 1157 to the late 15th century, the lordship rights over the lands around Glossop belonged to Basingwerk Abbey in North Wales. Monks from Basingwerk farmed around Charlesworth, and several times Monks found themselves in court in Glossop for poaching. The monks set up crosses at a number of locations around Glossop to mark the boundaries of the area they held. One of these crosses stood at Hadfield. The base of it still stands at Hadfield, though it no longer supports a cross. It has been reused to support a lamp-standard. One would like to think that if the monks who erected the cross in the thirteenth century had access to electricity, they might have produced something similar, to proclaim Jesus Christ, the light of the world.

At twilight, the modern use of the base of Hadfield Cross becomes clear.

There are six mediaeval boundary crosses around Glossop.
Starting at the top right, and proceeding clockwise, these are:
Lady Cross, Old Glossop Cross, Whitfield Cross, Charlesworth Cross (also known as the Abbot's Chair),
Robin Hood's Picking Rods and Hadfield Cross
