Montagu Hospital

Mexborough, South Yorkshire

The Montagu Hospital serves the population of the Dearne Valley in the former coal mining heart of South Yorkshire. This small but expanding hospital has been in existence for more than 100 years. It was built and paid for by subscriptions taken from the wage packets of local miners and there is still a strong sense that the hospital belongs to the local community.

The Minor Injury Unit is open from 9.00 until 22.00hours. It is a minor trauma centre which is run by Nurse Practitioners. They treat more than 20,000 patients per year and are helped by a live video connection to the Accident and Emergency department at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.  There are no facilities for major trauma or surgical emergencies. The medical unit which is open 24hrs a day to GP admissions has 56 acute beds and 16 rehabilitation beds. These are looked after by 2 Consultant Physicians, supported by a Staff Grade Physician and 5 Senior House Officers. The junior doctors are part of the medical rotation with Doncaster Royal Infirmary. The unit deals with all medical emergencies including the treatment of heart attacks. Medical patients can be admitted from 999 ambulance calls during the daytime and are received in the Medical Receiving Room which is now a part of the medical unit.

There are general surgical and orthopaedic inpatient beds and a day unit for day case surgery and endoscopy. A comprehensive range of outpatient facilities are available with Consultant staff visiting from Doncaster Royal Infirmary. During the past 5 years there has been change in the appearance of the hospital due to the building of a new entrance and improved outpatient areas with shops and a cafeteria incorporated into the reception area.

A new day surgical unit and new surgical/orthopaedic wards were completed in the Autumn 1997.

Within the day unit, which is multi-disciplinary, there is an endoscopy suite with facilities for upper and lower gastro-intestinal endoscopy and fibre-optic bronchoscopy. These fibre-optic instruments allow doctors to easily and quickly diagnose and treat patients with stomach and bowel disease. Bronchoscopy is used to inspect the bronchial tree and is a particularly useful investigation in patients suspected of having lung cancer.

The Wentworth unit provides intermediate care facilities with 7 day a week therapy and is run by a newly appointed Nurse Consultant Phillipa Hubbard. Patients recovering from the effects of a stoke are also rehabilitated within this unit and the rehabilitation centre which incorporates the former Day Hospital. The rehabilitation unit is site close to the medical wards opposite the social work department.

Respiratory Specialist Nurses - in Doncaster and Mexborough

For several years we have had the good fortune to have respiratory specialist  nurses working in both hospital and the community. They have educated patients and staff about asthma but they now are concentrating on helping patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diease. We now have new Respiratory sisters, Glynis Segust and Ruth McCook, who look after patients with chest conditions in this area.

There will be a section devoted to their work soon!!

Welcome to the new Junior doctors..

who joined us at the beginning of August 2006.. Thanks to Dr Feda Hassan, our staff grade for his help and loyalty since 2002.

We appointed a 3rd medical consultant in 2005. He is Dr S A Shah and his special interest is Gasto-enterology
