I've seen better weeks for singles...Still, I picked up four I took a fancy to this week (two of which I should really have put back down again). They were:

Single of the Week

"Happy Shopper" by 60ft Dolls

Finally, after a few promising but forgettable singles, 60ft Dolls produce a killer single in the form of "Happy Shopper". Crashing punk guitar and lyrics and a fab chorus make this an anthem of a song. Totally and unashamedly retro (Sham 69, Eddie & The Hot Rods, etc all spring to mind) and not exactly very original, but still very effective. Much has been made in the press about this band's 'high jinks', one music paper even coining the genre name 'Yob Rock'. Well, like their influences, these guys aren't exactly angels; but surely that's what this kind of music's all about?

The Rest

"I Kiss Your Lips" by Tokyo Ghetto Pussy

A reissue, this one (it was on TOTP2 as the 'Video Stir' a few months ago), this starts off as a piece of hard jungle-tinged techno. After the drums and beats have exhausted themselves, however, a cutesy female vocal begins to sing nursery rhyme lyrics over Moroder-like synth. The beat then kicks back in, and the overall effect is good: like Pizzicatto Five produced by Goldie. The 'Music For The Girlies' mix is also good, taking the main refrain from the original and taking it on an even harder, more techno journey.

"Bad Actress" by Terrorvision

Once I finally got into this (it came in a round metal box - presumably meant to be like a roll of film - nice idea, but I nearly cut the tips of my fingers off trying to open it), "Bad Actress" proves to be a competent but overall unexciting song lifted from Terrorvision's recent LP. Certainly not as catchy as "Perseverance", and more like traditional metal than the rap-metal they excel at. Rap-metal such as "Oblivion", included here, which is actually better than the a-side.

"Dune Buggy" by The Presidents of the United States of America

Hmmm. Not really very good at all. Just like "Lump" (which I loved), but with no tune, hook or anything else to make it memorable. The cover of "Video Killed The Radio Star" on the b-side's not bad though.
