Still recovering from the post-Christmas blues, the singles market should pick up again next week...

Single of the Week

"Montreal" by The Wedding Present

If David Gedge sang in an American accent - or like the Beatles - critics would be falling over themselves to champion them as wonders of the indie scene. Today, unfashionable but undaunted, they continue to release gems such as this.

A chiming piece of guitar pop, "Montreal" comes with all the scorned lover angst that has become the band's trademark. As the tune rises and falls in a catchy cadence, Gedge sings of his heartache as his lover leaves for another place whilst the guitars get slightly more fuzzier and distorted. By no means a classic, it is nevertheless a prime slice of true independent music.

B-sides are the wonderful "Sports Car" from last years "Mini" LP (sung brilliantly by the relatively new female member) and a couple of live tracks - including the matchless "My Favourite Dress".

The Rest

"Saturday Night" by Suede

A wonderful glam torch song, "Saturday Night" is lifted once more from last year's splendid "Coming Up" LP. Evocative and haunting, its sparkling guitar work - courtesy of Richard Oakes - is complemented perfectly by Anderson's familiar wasted London drawl. A bittersweet paean to the joys - or otherwise - of living for the weekend, it is Suede at their finest.

B-side "W.S.D" starts off sounding like an electro dub track - Suede go dance shock! However, as Brett's voice comes slinking over the horizon, it becomes another Suede glam-rock epic, albeit one with a pretty modern and experimental (for Suede) backing. Nice.

The remaining b-side is "Jumble Sale Mums", another slowie with sparkling guitars and sharp drumming. Nothing too outstanding, it is merely good (not enough for a band such as Suede).
