In the abscence of any new material from Portishead, this will do nicely as an alternative.
The comparison's a little unfair: Portishead are much darker and mellower than Moloko,
but the similarities are there - particularly in the vocals. Moloko are much more
tongue-in-cheek and wittier - the lyrics to their songs are always interesting to say
the least. (Check out the reference to Mr Spock in this track...). This song has an
immediate grip and addictive beat - I love it. The cd single also has 6
additional remixes of the track: 40 minutes of music for 2 quid ain't bad!
Admittedly 36 of those minutes sound pretty similar to the first 4...

The Rest
Missing out on my single of the week by the toss of a coin (it went to best of 5...).
This is a very Happy Mondays-like track from Shaun and Kermit (Bez's absence is noticable!!),
reminding me of both "Mad Cyril" and "God's Cop" - classic stuff. This is a more
rambling tune than BG's previous singles, but is a definite grower. Shaun sounds as
laid-back and spaced-out as always and Kermit adds his usual asides and an ace rapped verse.
Better than the Mondays (and coming from me, that's a big compliment). Also notable for the
"Pretty Vacant" cover on the b-side on which Shaun sounds remarkably similar to Mr Lydon
-"tonight, Shaun Ryder is...Johnny Rotten!" Top stuff.

Starting with a slow fiddle solo accompanied with mellow guitar, this kicks into a
classic indie-guitar anthem, sounding a little like Echo and the Bunnymen (with touches
of Kitchens of Distinction). Intelligent, memorable and very impressive with a definite
sing-along chorus. Nothing like their previous - and equally fine - "When We Were Young",
but just as welcome.
