1977 by ASH

This is a mighty fine LP...Ash make the kind of music I wish I could play...the singles obviously are the most immediate tracks (although the band can be heard to mature between tracks like "Girl From Mars" and latest single "Goldfinger").

The production is pretty impressive (check out the guitar on "I'd Give You Anything") and well-suited to this kind of music...which is why slower tracks such as "Oh Yeah" don't work so well, Tim's vocals appearing particularly weak on such tracks. Small quibbles though - this is a great LP...a definite one to play in the park on warm summer days...

The title is very knowing - it is the birthdate of two of the band, but the music is firmly entrenched in that era too, "Kung Fu" namechecking "Teenage Lobotomy" and keeping the Buzzcocks pop-punk flame burning bright ("Darkside Lightside" sounds very Pete Shelly).

"1977" also gives them the excuse to open the LP with the sampled sound of a Tie Fighter from Star Wars too - class!
