"All That Cheyenne Caboodle EP" by Dawn Of The Replicants"Diggin' Bear" takes the Pixies thing a bit further with a billowing song that rolls along inexorably like some out of control car filled with madmen. "Will You Ever 'Phone?" comes up next and is a smoky midnight ballad from the wrong side of town. Creepy and malevolent, its slow broodiness makes it all the more exciting. Last is "Skullcrusher", which sounds exactly like its name with a gigantic distorted drumbeat punctuating a claustrophobic wail of a track. Hats off to a band that appear to be doing something a little different. And who have a Bladerunner reference in their name, which is always a good thing. Rating: 10/10
The Rest"Debaser" by PixiesBut for those young uns out there, I almost envy you. To hear that bass riff for the first time, then to be bowled over by Black Francis' hellish hispanic howling and seduced by Kim Deal's siren vocals. Then there's the tune, which is every best rock and roll tune ever all rolled into one gory and messy package. And the lyrics which namecheck surreal French movies and slicing up eyeballs. God, why do some other bands bother? The review copy here is the live CD, and the b-sides are "Holiday Song", "Cactus" (another best) and "Nimrod's Son", all blistering and vital shrapnel grenades of explosive indie punk. Listen and learn (like Dawn Of The Replicants), or listen and weep. But make sure you listen. Rating: 10/10
"This Is Carnage" by TampasmAll the b-sides are similar: close your eyes and it could be L7 (which is not really meant as a compliment). Tampasm - go listen to some Pixies and come back when you've something better to offer. Rating: 3/10
