Single of the Week

"Sliding & Diving EP" by Tanya Donelly

Ex-Throwing Muses and ex-Belly, Tanya Donelly goes alone, following in the alternative, noisenik footsteps of Kim Deal and The Breeders with this vital release. Almost as prolific and talented as Kristen Hersh, her half-sister, Donelly constantly impresses and delights with her dynamic and well-crafted material.

"Bum", the first track, opens with an electro drum rhythm, then comes on all MBV wall-of-noise with added tune. Much more intense than anything she wrote for her previous two bands, this blows any cobwebs into the Atlantic, whilst still retaining Donelly's knack for writing a pop lyric and a hook-laden tune. Top stuff.

Next up is "Restless", a slow country-edged ballad dripping steel guitar chords and Donelly's rich, bordering-on-the-syrupy voice. This track is more in the Muses vein, and echoes her musical heritage. "Human" kicks back in with mile-high guitars and colossal drums, and a winding, spiralling tune. Powerful and affecting.

Closing this excellent, well-rounded EP is "Swoon", sounding exactly as its title suggests. Closest to her Belly-era material, this showcases Donelly's country girl from the wrong side of the tracks attitude. Sounding spookily like Sinead O'Connor in parts, "Swoon" is an epic, lush thing, full of strings and haunting moonlit vocals. Lovely.

The Rest

"Been It" by The Cardigans

Less easy-listening and more traditionally indie in sound and feel than previous material, and better than the disappointing "Lovefool", "Been It" still sounds lacking. Musically competent and lyrically fine, it misses the sparkle of The Cardigans of old. Ridiculously, the record company have decided to cover the word "whore" with a sampled guitar screech, meaning that your attention is completely drawn to the next bit of needless censorship. Prince's "Sexy MF" I can understand, but this seems a bit OTT.

This means we get an identical version of the a-side as an additional track, with the "offending" word left in. Other extra tracks are the messy "Blah Blah Blah" and the demo version of "Losers" - which ever so slightly recaptures past glories. Sadly however, this is the sound of a band that seems to have had their day...
