Drugstore
|
This interview took place over email with Daron Robinson, guitarist and
vocalist with Drugstore. Thanks to him and to Fruity for their time
and effort involved.
Mike & Isabel used to play together as a rhythm section. Eventually they
left the band they were in and decided to form Drugstore. They looked for a
singer until Mike decided that Isabel should try and sing...her voice
sounded pretty good and after trying a few guitarist I eventually joined
after seeing them play at a club I used to book in Islington.
How would you describe Drugstore's music to someone that had never heard
you before?
Introspective, emotional, warm, spontaneous exciting
So - what's the latest on the voodoo dolls?
The voodoo dolls are back! The stolen doll was returned with a mysterious
'sorry' note attached to. "Culprit beware"....it works you know!
How did the Thom Yorke collaboration come about? Were you pleased with
the results?
We toured America with Radiohead about 18 months ago and later we were
invited to Europe for 2 weeks. We all got on really well. We loved them as
people and as a band and we think that they felt the same way. Isabel wrote
'El President'....sent it to Thom.....he loved it...etc etc. It was only
decided on as a single as it was being finished, we liked it so much.
Has being a multi-cultural band caused you any difficulties, or has ithelped you
creatively?.
I think that it's harder to be pidgeon-holed by the press, we're not
Britpop, we're not American etc. Creatively I don't think it makes much
difference nowadays where you come from. Everyone all over the World hears
the same stuff on the radio, Beatles, Beach Boys, Country, Punk.
Your reaction to Geri leaving the Spice Girls...?
Three cheers.
If you could time-travel back to any period in history, when would it be and
what would you do there?
I'd travel back to last Summer and do the same thing again. (It's a long story)
Who do you see as your peers and contemporaries in the music world at the
moment? Who are/have been your biggest influences?
Radiohead (obviously), Tindersticks. Biggest influences probably The
Beatles, Echo & The Bunnymen (Ocean Rain) David Bowie (Hunky Dory), The
Beach Boys, Elvis, Velvet Underground.
What's your favourite song(s) from your own back catalogue?
No More Tears
What's been Drugstore's most surreal experience as a band so far?
Chart success
What are the band's plans for the future? Tour America, July & August - Then The Reading festival, a UK Tour, then back to America, then tour, tour, tour..........tour?
Finally, if you had to describe Drugstore as a flavour of ice-cream, whatwould
that be? Pistachio & Brazil Nuts
