IDLEWILD

Idlewild are on fire. Although his three blonde and skinny compatriots may conjure
up memories of Birdland, singer Roddy is in a class - and a world - of his own.
Throwing his frame around to the music or staring out oddly at the crowd like the
lovechild of Johnny Rotten and Bjork, Roddy is a charismatic and eminently watchable
frontman.
Cutting a dash in his denim dungarees and inside-out white t-shirt, he
spends most of this 30-minute set on the floor of the stage, but giving 110% (this is
a hometown crowd after all). Add to his kinetic fireworks the million mph guitar, bass
and drums from the blondie boys and you have a recipe for glorious madness.
"Captain" stands out from an impressive set, with Roddy screaming out the vocals in
vein-popping fashion as the rest of the band see just how far they can take their
irresistible racket.
If you peel away the sonic terrorism, every Idlewild song has a tune that would make
some songwriters weep with envy, and that is the secret of their success. Anyone can
play guitar, but only a select few can shoot down that big clay pigeon marked 'melody'.
Idlewild are firing with both barrels, and are on an unstoppable and well-deserved
rise to the top. Catch em before they explode.
