The following interview took place via email on 17 March 1998 with Tony James of Sigue Sigue Sputnik. Many thanks to him

i'd say techno/jungle was one. Post-SSS, bands like Westworld (even Billy Idol) took on some elements of the sound - if not the ethos and the image. How did you feel about that? Westworld were a little pastiche...Billy is always cool but he does Billy Idol rebel yellin the best, i felt cyberpunk was a wrong turning for him..he has his sound..stay great as u are Bill... Any other bands you feel you've had an influence on? How about Prodigy et al, for example?

us...
Did you feel cheated when the media and the music press rounded upon Sputnik? u always get hurt..u think the dream lasts for ever..buuuut man with big mouth always gets it from the media..they like u to be grateful not clever... Did you feel it was only a matter of time given the way you played them? inevitable..but we will be proved right i believe... Any chance of persuading the Spice Girls to be the new Ultravixens? (the inevitable HeadCleaner Spice Girls interview question - sorry everyone...) no What do you think of the Girls' success?
Is Martin's wardrobe as outrageous as ever? he looks the same..more so.. Looking back on those early days now, it is easy to just see the image and forget about the excitement and downright danger that the band generated. Did you ever feel truly threatened in those days? And is it possible to single out any one occurence as being the bizarrest thing to happen to you? it was sooo great ..a true force, that the media somehow forgot..danger is always part of great rock and roll..there were moments..the bomb sent to emi (see the insite story for this anecdote..) Who would be the members of your all-time fantasy supergroup (alive or dead)? aaaah...elvis fronts hendrix, keith moon, with the chemicals on rhythm...tapper zukie at the control...moroder on keyboards...sounds just like sputnik!! What do you think about Malcolm Mclaren's Junck project? Shades of She She Sputnik?? i guess....it comes from big business not the street which gives it the wrong spin..contrived sexuality is never dangerous..true sex ..now that's exciting With the internet and other technophile developments, it appears the future might have finally caught up with Sputnik's vision. What are your views on the way things are going in that sphere? yes yes yes...now u see..we had the vision but not the microprocessor power//...1000mhz here we come... Finally, where do you see SSS this time next year?
