LUSH
|
I wasn't sure quite what sort of audience was going to be at this gig: whether it was going to be young, attracted by Lush's current chart success; or whether it was going to be - like myself - older fans of Lush's 'shoegazing' material. As it turned out, it was a mixture, which was good - although it must be said, us oldies had the edge. Which was a reflection on the set that Lush played. Whether through the audience's familiarity with the songs, or the fact that they are great tracks anyway, numbers like "For Love" and "Sweetness and Light" went down the best. However, the new stuff was pretty impressive too: "Single Girl" and "Ladykillers" (played as a blinding encore) besides, numbers such as "500" and "Runaway" also impressed, putting paid - in my mind at least - to the accusations that the 'new' Lush is in some way a pale shadow of the Lush of old. Hearing both styles of song together in one gig proved that Lush have not turned into Elastica copyists - they can still write and play great music. They look good as well - they obviously enjoy being in a band together. Lush more than live up to their name, and it was good to see them back. |
