The Archaeological Field Unit has begun excavations in advance of building work at Ramsey Abbey School. The dig will throw new light on one of the finest Christian sites in the country - Ramsey Abbey.  The present excavations are taking place in what was probably the Outer Court - the area where much of the economic life of the monastery took place.

Here we might expect to find evidence of agricultural as well as industrial activities. Despite delays caused by the wettest April on record, the excavations have already revealed evidence of masonry walls, pits and ditches. Finds include fragments of dressed stone. Areas of building rubble may indicate the position of buildings which will be investigated as work progresses.
