CLOSED STATIONS AND GOODS DEPOTS

Abbey & West Dereham Station. GER Denver to Stoke Ferry. Platfrom remains and GER residential building (stationmaster's house?) to be found. Area very overgrown and damaged. Hard to locate evidence.

Aylsham North Station. MGNJR Melton Constable to North Walsham. Demolished post-closure - site now a car park for the Weaver's Way footpath.

Aylsham South Station. GER County School to Wroxham. Was the most complete range of surviving GER station buildings (station offices and house, goods shed, goods warehouse, water tower and crane), but was demolished to make way for heritage railway station (?!!!). Now the site of Bure Valley Railway's Aylsham headquarters.

Ashwellthorpe Station. GER Wymondham to Forncett. The original station buildings are now a private residence. Can be viewed from the main road. A modern road sign on the old A11 at Wymondham appears to point you towards the long-closed station, but is in fact pointing towards Ashwellthorpe village and Wymondham BR station.

Attlebridge Station. MGNJR Norwich to Melton Constable. Private residence built on site of original station to a similar design (although a lot larger), platforms are still present, as are the remains of a level crossing gate. A railway shed (platelayers hut?) survives to the north of the site near the car park provided for the Marriot's Way long distance footpath.

Bluestone Station. MGNJR Melton Constable to North Walsham. The station building is now a private house, with a garden centre in the former yard area. This station closed to passengers very early (c.1912), but served as a goods depot until final closure.

Buxton Lamas Station. GER County School to Wroxham. The original station buildings are now a private residence, although the platforms have been removed.

Caister Camp Halt. MGNJR Yarmouth to Melton Constable. *Awaiting Survey*

Caister On Sea Station. MGNJR Yarmouth to Melton Constable. *Awaiting Survey*

California Halt. MGNJR Yarmouth to Melton Constable. *Awaiting Survey*

Catfield Station. MGNJR Yarmouth to Melton Constable. Demolished for road improvement scheme.

Cawston Station. GER County School to Wroxham. The original station buildings are now a private residence. It can be seen from the Marriot's Way footpath. The railway cutting at the western end of the site has recently been filled in - perhaps for redevelopment?

Coltishall Station. GER County School to Wroxham. The original station buildings are now a private residence, although the platforms have been removed. The Bure Valley station is situated in the former yard area.

Corpusty Station. MGNJR Melton Constable to North Walsham. *Awaiting Survey*

Dunham Station. GER Dereham to Kings Lynn. The next station along the line from Fransham is preserved as part of a museum. The goods shed is in industrial use.

East Winch Station. GER Dereham to King's Lynn. Station now private residence, but very complete and unspoilt. Signal box derelict but intact beside former level crossing.

Fakenham East Station. GER Wymondham to Wells. Station and buildings demolished and replaced with sheltered housing. One level crossing gate post (relocated) can be seen on site - originally a gate had been retained as a reminder of times past, but it has fallen apart.

Fakenham West Station. MGNJR Melton Constable to King's Lynn. About twenty feet of the original platform remain in situ, with a very small apology for a commemorative plaque. Located opposite access road to Fakenham race course (on route of railway). Almost hidden by poorly managed garden plants.

Felmingham Station. MGNJR Norwich to Melton Constable. Remains in more or less as closed condition - the original railway cottages are in residential use. Weaver's Way long distance footpath runs between the platforms and there is a car park in the former yard.

Foulsham Station. GER County School to Wroxham. The original station buildings are now a private residence, with the platforms and offices still present. The station can be viewed from a nearby public road.

Fransham Station. GER Dereham to King's Lynn. This station, on the former East Dereham to King's Lynn line, survives in good order. It is the home of two former GER coaches (mounted on sleepers), and a small Ruston 88DS diesel locomotive. There is also a short section of 2 foot gauge line, with a couple of items of rolling stock (one of which is a "Thomas" style steam outline vehicle). This is a private residence, and is not open to the general public, although it can be viewed from the old level crossing. It is worth noting that the platform and waiting room are on the opposite side of the running line from the station house and former ticket office. This was a common feature of small stations in this area.

Great Ormesby Station. MGNJR Yarmouth to Melton Constable. *Awaiting Survey*

Guestwick Station. MGNJR Norwich to Melton Constable. Private residence, well preserved.

Hardwicke Road Goods. MGNJR Melton Constable to Kings Lynn. Original yard access gate survives beside former railway bridge on A47 (located behind road sign). Area heavily damaged by road scheme, may vanish completely with new roundabout construction.

Heacham Station. GER King's Lynn to Hunstanton. Survives in good order as part of a caravan park. The signal box was finally demolished circa 1995.

Hemsby Station. MGNJR Yarmouth to Melton Constable. *Awaiting Survey*

Hellesdon Station. MGNJR Norwich to Melton Constable. Station demolished, though there are some platform remains and traces of a yard gate. Marriot's Way footpath runs through the site and there is a car park provided.

Hethersett Station. GER Norwich to Ely. Survives more or less as at closure. Platforms have been removed, but the canopy is still present, as is the platform goods store. The station building is semi-derelict, but used as part of a tyre store.

Hillington Station. MGNJR South Lynn to Melton Constable. Station preserved as private home.

Hindolvestone Station. MGNJR Norwich to Melton Constable. Private residence, well preserved. Nearby level crossing cottage retains original signal cabin.

Holme Hale Station. GER Swaffham to Roudham Junction. Station well preserved, with goods shed and signal box. Residential site, visible from former level crossing.

Holt Station. MGNJR Cromer to Melton Constable. A goods loading dock (cattle dock?) and a set of concrete buffers can be found in the yard of the former grannary building beside the original station site.

Honing Station. MGNJR Yarmouth to Melton Constable. Partially demolished. Platforms and part of waiting room can be found in the undergrowth, as could a small water pump house. There is a car park on this site for the Weaver's Way footpath, which runs through the platforms.

Langor Bridge Goods. MGNJR Melton Constable to King's Lynn. Meadow. Signal box, lamp room and railway housing in private hands.

Lenwade Station. MGNJR Norwich to Melton Constable. Remains in more or less as closed condition - suffered from the theft of internal items (including the floor) in 1999. Weaver's Way long distance footpath runs between the platforms and there is a car park on the former running line north of the station.

Little Ormesby Halt. MGNJR Yarmouth to Melton Constable. *Awaiting Survey*

Martham Station. MGNJR Yarmouth to Melton Constable. *Awaiting Survey*

Melton Constable. MGNJR Headquarters. Melton Constable was once the hub of the 180 mile Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway and had more in common with Crewe or Doncaster than rural Norfolk. Trains ran from Melton Constable to Norwich, Cromer, North Walsham and Yarmouth, Fakenham, King's Lynn and Peterborough. Almost the entire network was closed in 1959, although Melton remained as a branch line terminus until the late 1960s. The station has been demolished, but the locomotive works and associated buildings remain - along with the houses, institutes and school provided by the railway for it's employees. Two canopy spandrels were used in the building of the new bus shelter to be found near the site of the old station.

Mundesley Station. NSJR Cromer to North Walsham. Redeveloped site.

Narborough and Pentney Station. GER Dereham to King's Lynn. Private residence. Station in good order, but has recently changed hands.

Newtown Halt. MGNJR Yarmouth to Melton Constable. *Awaiting Survey*

North Walsham Town Station. MGNJR Yarmouth to Melton Constable. Demolished. Part of site now used for a fuel condensate depot, which pipes fuel from Bacton in a line laid under the formation of the former NSJR Mundesley branch.

Norwich Station. GER Norwich to London. The original Norwich Station was replaced by Norwich Thorpe and became a goods depot until the redevelopment of the Riverside area in 1997. A small part of the station remains and is used as the Anglia Railways' staff signing-on point.

Norwich City Station. MGNJR Norwich to Melton Constable. Remains are thin on the ground due to redevelopment of the site. Foundations of some of the yard buildings can be found in the undergrowth and there is some railway fencing. What is thought to be a railway-provided public toilet is located beside the nearby road/river bridge (this toilet has been locked out of use for a number of years, but thankfully not demolished).

Norwich Victoria Station. GER Norwich to London. This station closed to passengers in 1912, but remained open to goods until the mid-1980s. The yard was used as a coal concentration depot, but has since closed and is now a supermarket. The just-about surviving Victoria signal box was demolished at this time and the site used as part of the supermarket car park. There is now almost nothing to see at this site, although the rail bridges still stand.

Overstrand Station. NSJR Cromer to North Walsham. Private house. Well preserved with canopy and underpass. Can be seen from nearby footpath.

Paston and Knapton Station. NSJR Cromer to North Walsham. Private residence. Well preserved. Can be viewed from neighbouring farm overbridge.

Potter Heigham Station. MGNJR Yarmouth to Melton Constable. Demolished for road improvement scheme.

Potter Heigham Bridge Halt. MGNJR Yarmouth to Melton Constable. Demolished for road improvement scheme.

Raynham Park Station. MGNJR Melton Constable to King's Lynn. Private residence, hard to find, but worth the effort. Very complete collection of buildings and lots of memorabilia evident. Can be easily viewed from the former level crossing.

Reepham Station. GER County School to Wroxham. Retail/Cycle hire - station and large goods shed surviving in good order.

Ryston Station. GER Denver to Stoke Ferry. Station and platforms still extant, though formation partially landscaped. Level crossing gates survive (1997) in situ.

Scratby Halt. MGNJR Yarmouth to Melton Constable. *Awaiting Survey*

Sidsetrand Station. NSJR Cromer to North Walsham. Redeveloped site.

Snettisham Station. GER King's Lynn to Hunstanton. Survives as a private residence. The signal box had been relocated closer to the main station buildings, but was removed from the site in 2004.

Stalham station. MGNJR Yarmouth to Melton Constable. Main station building, part of platform and remains of MGNJR carriage body remain. Was used as a highways depot until recently and the station is pictured being dismantled and relocated to Holt on the North Norfolk Railway in January 2002.

Stoke Ferry Station. GER Denver to Stoke Ferry. Station substantially complete, along with goods shed. Varied uses include residential and light industry. Visible from main road.

Swaffham Station. GER Dereham to King's Lynn. Rebuilt as a day-centre - minus canopy and other fittings. Goods shed survives in industrial use.

Thursford station. MGNJR South Lynn to Melton Constable. Goods shed (?) and small lamp room remained until 2005. Goods shed relocated to Holt on NNR.

Trowse Station. GER Norwich to Ely. Survives as offices. Formerly used as an "emergency station" for Norwich Thorpe, the platforms have now been removed to allow for additional sidings for the rail served aggregates depot.

Watton Station. GER Swaffham to Roudham Jcn. Demolished and redeveloped.

Wendling Station. GER Dereham to King's Lynn. Demolished as part of road scheme (A47).

Whitlingham Station. GER Norwich to Cromer. Final traces old platforms and former yard removed during line modernisation.

Whitwell Station. MGNJR Norwich to Melton Constable. Remains in more or less as closed condition - although very derelict. Roof repaired in 1999, so someone loves it! Up platform waiting room was removed for preservation on the North Norfolk Railway, but was found to be uneconomic to restore. Goods shed standing and yard area clear and undeveloped. There had been talk of this station being relocated to the North Norfolk Railway's Holt terminus, but this plan has been abandoned (see Stalham station). Marriot's Way long distance footpath runs between the platforms and there is a car park provided.

Wolferton Station. GER King's Lynn to Hunstanton. The former station of the Royal Family. The Sandringham estate refused permission for signage to the museum, and the owner was forced, therefore, to close this unique and irreplacable museum. It has been converted into a private house, so at least the fabric of the station should survive. It is still worth a visit - if only to look at the signal box built into the railwayman's cottages.

Yarmouth Beach Station. MGNJR Yarmouth to Melton Constable. Survived remarkably well for a number of years as a bus station, but has since been demolished.

Yarmouth South Town Station. GER Yarmouth to Lowestoft. Demolished and redeveloped.

PERMANENT WAY AND ENGINEERING FEATURES

County School. Platform two has been relayed using recovered Great Eastern Railway c.1878-1882 chairs and rail. This is probably some of the oldest rail still in use on a railway line. The material was recovered from Cantley Sugar Factory.

Even the more usual BR and LNER material in platform one is of interest - having been recovered from Kings scrapyard in Norwich, where it had been the final destination of many express passenger engines!

Cromer. The only remaining former railway tunnel in Norfolk, this cut-and-cover tunnel took the Norfolk and Suffolk Joint's Cromer Beach to Mundesley line under the Great Eastern's Cromer High to Norwich line. Housing and heavy undergrowth make access very difficult, but the portals are open and the bore is intact and stable.

Cromer. The twin viaducts which carried the two chords of the Cromer traingle (MGNJR) are still present, although only one now carries track.

Fakenham Crossing. The bridge where the GER Norwich to Wells line crossed the MGNJR Melton Constable to Kings Lynn line is still in situ, complete with deck, as the GER line remained open for freight until 1981. Please note that the handrails on the bridge are no longer secure. Can only be approached from the GER formation.

Kelling Junction. The MGNJR bought a triangle of land to be the junction for the proposed Holt to Blakeney branch. The line was never built, but the site has now been cleared and serves as the North Norfolk Railway's Holt station.

Kings Lynn Crossing. The bridge where the GER Dereham to Kings Lynn line passed under the MGNJR Melton Constable to Kings Lynn line is still evident - deck removed - with track in situ on the surviving section of the GER route (see Middleton Towers).

Kings Lynn Docks and Industrial Lines. Kings Lynn had a large docks and industrial system, and there are many traces of this network to be found in the town. Although all these lines are now non-operational, a couple have retained their track in case of future need. The surviving tracks of the dock system are heavily overgrown, and are now isolated from the mainline. A spur of the former South Docks branch comes away from the electrified main line under the A47, where the electrification masts stand between former running lines, and runs to the former "muck works" site. The former muck works has clear traces of sidings (with some rail extant) and an internal rail system. This site is scheduled to be redeveloped in the near future, so interested parties should look sooner rather than later. The spur to the south of the A47 is the former link-line between Kings Lynn (GER) and South Lynn (MGNJR) which was retained for industrial use after the MGNJR closed. This is now derelict and has been partially lifted, although EWS have considered using is as a regional freight hub.

Themelthorpe Curve. The Themelthorpe Curve was built to link the GER County School to Wroxham line with the MGNJR Melton Constable to Norwich City line in the late sixties. It was built to shorten the journeys of freight trains running from the goods depots at Norwich City, Hellesdon, Drayton, the concrete plant at Lenwade and the main line at Norwich Thorpe. It was the last section of railway built by British Railways in the county and now forms part of the Marriot's Way footpath. Some warning boards remain (the line finally closed in the early 1980s) and you can see the remains of the bridge where the MGNJR passed over the rival GER route. There is also a standard MGNJR crossing cottage here (private residence).

Wells-On-Sea Quay Branch. The formation of this line can be traced from the former station site to the harbour area, where it has been lost to redevelopment.

Yarmouth Docks Line. Until quite recently most of the running line was still clearly visible, but a lot has now been buried under resurfacing work or lost in redevelopments. The bridge connecting the docks to Yarmouth Vauxhall station is scheduled to be removed in the near future.
