Railway Background
At the age of 16 Richard Cullen became a volunteer on the North Norfolk Railway. By 18 he had trained as a guard on the line, and had also worked as a cleaner on the steam fleet and helped on the track and signalling.
After passed his (road) driving test he used some of his free time to explore the remains of the county's once-extensive rail network. In doing so he discovered that there were far more extensive remains to be explored than he had thought possible - also finding that Citroen 2CVs are quite capable of reaching "line speed" on abandoned track beds!
By this time he had moved to Dereham, and discovered the nascent Mid-Norfolk Railway, then based at County School station as the Wensum Valley Railway. As the line was closer to home, in need of volunteers and was likely to provide a service he wanted to use on a daily basis he "jumped ship" and did the same job on a new route!
He is still a regular volunteer on the Mid-Norfolk Railway, and is usually a member of the Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway.
General Background
Richard was born at North Walsham in November 1971. Richard is an Oxford graduate and holds a job which he both enjoys in its own right and provides him with enough free time and money to indulge his hobbies.
Apart from working on railways, he enjoys skiing, surfing, archery, target shooting, history/archeology, literature, world travel and is slowly (very slowly) working towards his Private Pilot's Licence. He also occasionally sings and plays bass guitar in a band and, in the time left over, is studying Civil Law.
