Jesus in this passage was not yet well known as he had not yet performed any miracles. Jewish wedding feasts lasted a week and it was necessary for the groom to have adequate provisions - it was embarrassing to run out of goods and you could be find because of it!
Mary reported the problem to Jesus but he told her in v.4 that he would be doing what the Father wanted him to do.
What advice does Mary give in verse 5 that we should also take note of?
Jesus' first miracle was not a spectacular event that everybody witnessed. The miracle however has a deeper meaning. What do you think the water inside the jars represents?
Who knew the source of the special wine?
We must not use this miracle as an arguement for the use of alcoholic beverages today. It is worth noting that the Jews always diluted the wine with water usually to the proportion of 3 parts water to one part wine. While the Bible does not command total abstinance, it certainly magnifies it and definitely warns against drunkeness.
