When and Where Found
Ants Through The Year
On a warm day in late summer, thousands of young queen ants and male ants come out of the nests where they have grown up. Unlike the other ants in the nests, they have wings. They fly up into the air to mate. After mating, the ants fly back to earth, and the males die soon afterwards. The queen stays underground all winter. When spring comes, she starts laying tiny eggs. Soon young ants hatch from the egg. They are called larvae. After a few weeks, the larvae are ready to change into adult ants. To do this, they spin a light brown case around themselves. We call this a pupa. Inside the pupa case an adult ant is taking shape. When it is ready, the queen cuts the case open, and the new ant crawls out.
