Webkinz are stuffed animals, somewhat over-commercialised but innovative in their own way, that are made by Ganz. The toys are similar to other small plush toys, but they come with a special 8 character code that allows access to 'Webkinz World', a web site to own and play with a virtual version of the pet, as part of a multi-player online system, based around KinzCash - virtual money. The more Webkinz you buy, the more money, rooms and items you get.

There are many types of Webkinz: normal pets (cats, dogs, etc.), wild animals, mythical creatures, and so on. Kids can spend their KinzCash at the W Shop, where they can purchase food and clothing for their pet, items for their pet's room or build additional rooms onto their house. Rooms can be decorated with pre-made themes and custom furniture.

In addition to a cluster of mini-games, the online world also contains exclusive items. Some of these items can only be purchased after developing a friendship with the Shop owner. Each type of pet gets a special food created exclusively for them. In addition, a Pet of the Month is announced. If a person registers the announced pet in that month, they'll receive other exclusive items.

Related items include 'W-Plus' toys, which also have a code and can be cashed in 'online', plus special trading cards. If you thought Webkinz themselves were over-commercial, you ain't seen nothing yet! The biggest problem for parents is the cost of buying the toys - once online, you're kids are safe because there are no free chat facilities. So all is well until they come asking for more money for more Webkinz. Sigh.
