Duncan was born on the 1st February 1860 at Tirfuir on the south-west foot of Lismore Island, the second son and sixth child to Alexander and Mary. It looks like he was named after his grandfather Duncan Buchanan following the standard naming pattern. Tirfuir , pronounced Tirry-foor, means  cold-place and may have been the original name for the island. It is now just a few farm buildings but still standing, a few hundred yards away,  is the pre-christian Pictish broch.  Duncan followed the farming family tradition and it was whilst working as a ploughman at Inneshewan, near Killin that he met his future wife, Mary Geddes (as she was known then). They married on 28th November 1892 at the nearby Luib Hotel.
