Words cannot express the feeling that I just experinced reading the brief words of knowledge of Lismore. I have visited this place only once, but I am still in awe of its beauty and grace. I met a young man that gave me the "royal tour" and I was again greatly impressed. I experienced such a great feeling of being home that it was difficult to hold back the tears. I was visiting Scotland as a guest to compete in the highland games representing the U.S.I competed throughot Scotland and England. I did get the chance to compete against Geoff Capes and I must say he was a very impressive young man. I did manage to beat him for the honor of Athelete of the Day.I must say I was very lucky and I CERTAINLY KNEW IT.I will end with the final statement thatI truely am so glad thatI was able to meet and greet all the wonderful people that I met on my journey. One more name needs to be mentioned. That was Douglas Edmonds. Without men, such as Dougie, the island would not be the same.

Kess Campbell in Richmond, Virginia, USA at 20:17:4 Sunday June 16 2002
Wonderful work, Tom! Thank you for the colorful image of Bothkennar, where my maternal line hails back to. I am descended from the Simpson/Towers lines through Jane Towers m. Samuel Hawkins in Maine. (Jane is my 3xgr.grandmother). Jane's father Robert Towers came over from Bothkennar to Nova Scotia with his brother William and possibly one or two other siblings. They settled Tower Hill in New Brunswick, Canada. -------- 1. JOHN2 TOWERS (JAMES1) was born Abt. 1730 in Kirkton, Bothkennar, Sterlingshire, Scotland, and died 1781 in Kirkton, Bothkennar, Sterlingshire, Scotland. He married JANET SIMPSON August 05, 1749 in Bothkenner Parish, Scotland, daughter of WILLIAM SIMSON. She was born WFT Est. 1712-1738 in Lisdale, Bothkennar, Sterlingshire, Scotland, and died 1781 in Kirkton, Bothkennar, Sterlingshire, Scotland. Notes for JOHN TOWERS: [vol69-1449.ftw] The assignment of James Towers and Agnes Watt as the parents of John Towers is purely speculation, base on the Scottish "Old Parochial Records" or OPRs. A christening or birth record has not been located, however, the fact that both a Robert Towers and a James Watt acted as witnesses to two of the christenings of John Towers' children suggests that there is a relationship. In addition, two of James Towers and Agnes Watt's daughters were married in the parish of Bothkennar, indicating the family probably had close ties in the immediate area. More About JOHN TOWERS and JANET SIMPSON: Marriage: August 05, 1749, Bothkennar Parish, Scotland Children of JOHN TOWERS and JANET SIMPSON are: 2. i. WILLIAM3 TOWERS, b. February 24, 1749/50, Kirkton, Bothkennar, Sterlingshire, Scotland; d. January 11, 1835, Tower Hill, St. David Parish, Charlotte Co., NB. ii. JAMES TOWERS, b. January 07, 1753 Bothkennar, Scotland iii. JOHN TOWERS, b. November 27, 1757 Bothkennar, Scotland iv. ELIZABETH TOWERS, b. June 10, 1759; d. February 08, 1781, Bothkennar, Sterlingshire, Scotland. v. THOMAS TOWERS, b. March 25, 1764 Bothkennar, Scotland vi. WALTER TOWERS, b. May 03, 1767 Bothkennar, Scotland 3.vii. ROBERT TOWERS, b. June 03, 1769, Kirkton, Bothkennar, Sterlingshire, Scotland; d.Tower Hill, St. David Parish, Charlotte Co. New Brunswick

One of my avenues of search has indicated that our family roots started in Dundee and indeed we do have some intersting info. one of these leads, stated that a few hundread years ago some of our ancestors where guilty of @castle rustling@ not a thing to be proud of but no actual proof is apparant. We are living in Lowestoft(suffolk) after coming here from Grimsby(lincs) but I am using my sons website in Bury st Edmunds. So replys may be longwinded.

Great site! I dont know which Elliot is my earliest because he spelled his last name 4 different ways, even Ellot. All I know is he appeared in Pennsylvania, USA in the early to mid 1600's and in PA was known as "Peoter of Carcushooke, the Scottsman among the Swedes". I heard a great amount of Elliot's left the border area in the early 1600's because of the union of the crown's. He was probably one of them.

[Mr] Robin Forlonge Patterson in In office in central Wellington City, but I live in the suburbs of the adjoining Porirua City at 1:12:32 Tuesday October 9 2001
Hello, Tom, me again. I looked at the result of my posting and realised that your system probably accepts html and therefore ignores anything in a tag (which is why I seemed to be suggesting that you add one of two things that both looked like " ") and ignores people's carriage returns (which is why most of your guests have sentences running on without paragraphs and without even spaces between sentences). The reason why I was suggesting a "br" or "p" was that the first time I saw this "Write in my Guestbook" screen it had the box for email at the start of the second line, below the "Your Name:", so I thought it would be easier if you added a "line break" to put "Email" down in the second line with it. Now I see both boxes in the first line, because I've closed my "Search" window and come back to full screen size. But other people could easily have similar viewing problems (depending on how their browsers behave) if your code continues to try to put both boxes in one line with apparently fixed lengths. Very small point really, but I must have confused anyone who read the first message, so I thought I should clear it up properly. And now that I've seen more of your site I like it even better. Keep up the good work. (But maybe check that nobody else has done that "sterling" work on Stirlingshire?)

[Mr] Robin Forlonge Patterson in Plimmerton, Porirua City, New Zealand at 22:29:4 Monday October 8 2001
Hi, Tom! A Paterson searcher referred me to this site, where I don't think I've been before. I like the pictures at the top. Please try to put a " " or " " before the "Email" in the intro to this page, to make it more obvious what goes where. My Patersons were from Angus; most who emigrated changed their name to Patterson before leaving, though some were "Petterson" in the 1851 census of Kirkden, which I suspect was a matter of pronunciation improperly understood by a census clerk not familiar with the accent. My father's mother was a MacGregor whose father was of Callendar origin: bridgebuilder relatives. You and your Paterson relatives may be interested in listing your earlier generations on the Patterson webBase that I administer, as a way of increasing your chances of finding more relatives: http://www.cobnet.com/webBase/patterson/search.pl Best wishes from the Antipodes!

KENNETH LAUTH at 5:4:26 Monday July 30 2001
As I research my family surname it changes. From 1750 AD to current it is Lauth. Prior to 1750 AD my great great great grandfather was called Rudolf Laud in German Alsace. He left the Saint Bernard Pass in the Grenoble area of southeastern France where he was born and went to the newly conquered French province of Alsace and eventually to German Alsace. The French king wanted to repopulate Alsace with French and Swiss citizens because in the thirty years war two\thirds of the Alsatian citizens were killed. My ancestors and many relatives had fled from England and sought refuge in the Alpine mountians of France. This occurred after their kinsman the Archbishop William Laud was beheaded by the Puritans and Presbyterian under Oliver Cromwell in 1644 AD. At this point I need some help. Please, communicate with me. We may be able to help each other. Best Regards Ken Lauth. Postal Address:Kenneth Lauth e-mail:kblauth@home.com 101 Rhodes Avenue Pittsburgh, PA 15220 USA

What a great site!! I was beginning to think I had found out about as much as I could without going to Scotland or paying someone when I found your site last night. I quickly found my Granny's grandparents, George Corbet and Mary-Ann Henderson, and her g-grandparents, George Corbet and Mary Black. I guess they're your family tree which would make us some kind of cousins? I wasn't sure what luck I'd have making that leap back over to Scotland. I do have a copy of the birth certificate of my Granny, Mary Brown, which gives a lot of info and recently found the family bible confirming the marriage date and location of Marion Corbet & William Brown. Also saw from the 1881 census where my Granny was in that year. Putting everything together is so interesting. Thank you so very, very much. Marion Knight P.S. Where are you?

Dear Tom. Great website! My gt grandfather was Edward Horatio de Courcy Martelli b Milltown Co Kerry about 1843. He was the son of Horatio de Courcy Martelli (not sure if he was legit or otherwise.) His father Norton Charles Martelli married Letitia Godfrey daughter of Sir William Godfrey and Agnes Blennerhassett. Although there is the connection with the de Courcys and the Blennerhassetts, I suspect our de Courcy name may have come from a Godparent. I am searching for John Hoppringle of Torsonce, Stow, Midlothian 1702.On December 22nd 1702,in the little hamlet of Haughfoot, Stow a Masonic Lodge was founded, which flourished for 61 years until 1763, and apparently disappeared into thin air.Although nothing now remains of the hamlet of Haugfoot, the minute book of the Lodge is still in existence and on its leaves are recorded one of the most important events in the history of Freemasonry. In the first minute, the names of the founding members are recorded for posterity.John Hoppringle of Torsonce, Sir James Scott of Gala Thomas Scott his brother, David Murray in Philiphaugh, James Pringle in Haughfoot and his brother John Pringle in Haughfoot,Robert Lourie in Stow,Andrew Thomson Local Lawyer in Gala. This Lodge is important Because none of these founding members was an operative mason thus we have the first ever record in the world of a purely speculative lodge. The Haughfoot Lodge is therefore the earliest link between operative and speculative lodges but its importance does not even rest there.

A quarter of a century ago (!) I graduated from Glasgow University with a degree in Scottish History & Literature. This terrific site is the first time I've actually seen those two subjects come to life in the modern age. Superb job/passion, although I shivered when I read "Statistical Account" -- thought I'd managed to repress that memory! I found out last year my natural father was called Douglas Millar (poss. Miller) and came from Dunipace, and I'm just starting out on the road to finding out more. He would have been born in the 1930s. Keep up the brilliant work -- I'll let you all know how I get on!

James Hotchkies was a coal miner and moved his family to Old Monklands, where all of his sons, Michael, John and James became coal miners too. I spent part of my growing up years in Scotland (Dumbarton) and often heard the Hotchkies name but did not know about the Bothkennar connection. Thank you.

I was interested in your site of Lismore because I once have read somewhere that the MacBeth's and MacBean's had something to do with the Isle. They have been docters or did something in medics in the 12th-13th century. I am interested in this clan because 14 years ago I founded the Clan MacBeth Pipe Band in Holland and since a few years I am Pipe Major of this band. Since years I am searching for historic things which have something to do with this Clan. Second thing is that I saw on a site that there is a cottage for sale on the Island and my great wish is to live once in Scotland so somewhere you have to make a start. My dearest regards and thanks for the information.

came across your website by accident, but you've aroused my interest in the clan ancestry, my mum always said we were Mclarens, so maybe we are distant relatives, in more ways than one. Originated in Brechin Angus Scotland, illegitimate son of Ella Paterson, who was daughter of one James Paterson, but thats as far as my current knowledge goes, will get in touch if I find more. Keep up the good work, and lots of luck. Ron

Hi. I have ancestors William WRIGHT married Margaret MCBETH in Kippen in 1833. They had children in Thornhill and Airdie, and possibly elsewhere as he was a miner, I believe. I would be interested in anything more on these names, which I think have a longer connection with these areas Thanks, Barrie Wright

I have just bought a mid victorian house in Denny. I know it has only been owned by just 5 families - and built by the Forbes' How can I find out as much as possible about the house and the past owners Oh yes, I have found your on-line access to the statistical account a great help. It saved a lot of time in the librarytrying to sort out points of interest!

I found your web-site very interesting. My grandfather Stanely Paterson is from Banff and I have lots of other relatives in the Banff and Macduff area. My mother is trying to trace our family tree but has only managed to trace back to round about the early 1900's. It would be really good if you could get back in touch with me as I'd like to find out more about our family.
