A brief biography of the Headmaster

Mr Mitchell took up the post of Headmaster of Abbey Gate College in September 1991 having previously been Deputy Head of Kirkham Grammar School in Lancashire.

He is a graduate of the University of Wales and has a broad background in both single sex and coeducational schools, having begun his teaching career as Housemaster and English Master at William Hulme Grammar School in Manchester. Mr Mitchell’s wide experience and expertise have been recognised by his election to the Committee of SHMIS (Society of Headmasters and Headmistresses of Independent Schools) and he is also a fully qualified member of the Independent Schools Inspectorate.

During his ten years in office, Abbey Gate College has built on its reputation as an academic school but with a caring emphasis and in the wider sense, the success of the recent leadership has been shown in the expansion of the College to Junior and Infant levels as well as considerable success at A Level, GCSE and Oxbridge entrance.

Mr Mitchell is a keen cricketer, having represented his university and played in league cricket competition for many years. Among his other interests, he lists classical music (particularly 19th century romantic music), railway photography, and good French wine! Mr Mitchell is happily married to Jane and their two children, Sarah and Thomas both attended Abbey Gate College before going up to university.

He is a communicant member of the Church of England, a member of the Chester Business Club and the Dean’s Breakfast.

For some time he served on the Finance Sub Committee of Chester Cathedral in an advisory capacity. Mr Mitchell is always very pleased to welcome parents and children to Abbey Gate College and to Aldford School at any time; he personally conducts tours of the site with the help of pupils who are always very anxious to help!
