In memory of the WTC tragedy

School established in 1943.
Mr. Sam Makama, Headmaster since 1987.
With Glenys van Halter,
who wrote the letter about
conditions at the school.

Witkoppen School, South Africa. The Headmaster Mr. S. Makama with Glenys van Halter.

Witkoppen Primary School. Pupils with their daily meal of a slice of bread

For most of these children this
one slice of day old bread is
the only meal they will have,
as the school has no canteen
or kitchen facilities.
BUT THEY STILL SMILE!

  • Class sizes of 70 pupils plus is an everyday occurrence.
  • Only one toilet for 600 pupils.
  • There is no form of heating for the winter months.
  • No canteen or kitchen facilities, so pupils do not have
any form of hot meal summer or winter.
Due to lack of classrooms
and teachers, this volunteer teacher has to teach this small group outside.
AND STILL SMILING!

  • Repairing this school and the 3 others in the area alone
will provide much needed work in the area.
  • With some of the pupil's parents being employed, they
will be able to EAT and buy CLOTHES.

  • A letter from Glenys van Halter, telling us about the
school, it's condition and the pupils, is compelling reading
    .

Please take the time to read this letter.
Each time I do, it makes me thankful for what I have.
One of the permanent teachers takes a small class of children outdoors again due to lack of facilities.
The teacher is experimenting with a class of only a few pupils.
