Type 162
Type Hull mounted Range 1800' In service 1948
The Type 162 was for classifying tragets on the seabed. Trials were carried out aboard Helmsdale. The system consisted of three transducer strips, one on each side of the ship and one on the keel.


Type 164
Type Hull mounted Range N/A In service 1950
The Type 164 was a development of the Type 160 and was used to provide fire control data for the Squid AS mortar. It operated in the 14kHz to 22kHz range.


Type 170

The Type 170 was a narrow beam set used for attack. It operated in the 15kHz - 30kHz range and was used to provide fire control data for the Limbo AS mortar.


Type 174

The Type 174 was used to provide fire control data for the Squid AS mortar.


Type 177
Type Hull mounted Range 10NM In service 1956
The Type 177 was a long range search set with a 4 ton array that measured 4' square.


Type 184

The Type 184 replaced the Type 177 and was a low frequency sector scan set capable of scanning 360 degrees.


Type 199

The Type 199 was the first British VDS and based on the Canadian SQS-504.


Type 2016

The Type 2016 can track multiple targets, provide attack warning and can scan through 360 degrees. It consists of 768 targets and was tested in the destroyer Matapan.

Type 2031I
Type Towed array Range N/A In service 1980
The Type 2031I was the first modern British towed array and is 500 metres long. Trials were conducted aboard the frigate Lowestoft in 1977.

Type 2031Z

The Type 2031Z features different electronics to the Type 2021I. It has been fitted to some Type 22 and Type 23 frigates.


Type 2050

The Type 2050 was developed by Ferranti to replace the Type 2016. Trials were conducted onboard the frigate Scylla between 1986 and 1987. The set has been fitted to some Type 22s and the Type 23s. Older ships with Type 2016 sets can be upgraded with some of the Type 2050 processing modules.
