The Dakar vanished in the eastern Mediterranean while on her delivery voyage. She was formerly the British submarine HMS Totem, which had been refitted in Britain after being sold to Israel. The wreck was not located, and many theories were suggested, including the possibility that the boat was deliberatly sunk by an Arab country. On 28th May 1999 the wreck was finally located by a company hired by the Israeli Navy. She lies in two parts more than 9500' down. Although the reason for the loss has not been announced, it seems most likely that she was accidentally rammed by a surface ship. |
