The British E class design would become the basis of the first Australian submarines. Both would be lost on service, the only Australian Navy ships lost in WW1. |

The Otways were bought after a competition between the British Oberons and the
American Barbels in which the British boats won. They have all been retired with the
arrival of the Collins class, but gave excellent service over a long time.
They baots were bought in 2 batches. Onslow, Otway, Ovens and Oxley were commissioned in the late 60's, Orion and Otama in the late 70's. |

The Collins are Australias first homebuilt submarines. Although very advanced,
their construction has proved controversial, and reported noise and propeller shaft
problems are proving expensive to fix.
They are based on a Kockums design, and are named after Australian sailors. |
