These ships were based on the previous Radetzky class, and, as the combined goverment refused to
provide funds initially, the Command In Chief personally guaranteed the 32 million crowns for
Viribis Unitis and Tegetthoff.
Underwater protection was poor, but above water armour was adequate, and they were the first battleship to be completed with triple turrets. |

This class is sometimes known as the Ersatz Monarch class, as they were intended to
replace the Monarch class predreadnoughts in service. So that ammunition supplies could be
guaranteed, the ships adopted the 13.8" guns of the German Mackensens.
The contracts were never signed due to political wrangling and names were never officially assigned. Some of the guns were built, and later used for shore defence. |
