History & Modifications



Notes:
The aft pair of 6" guns were removed from all the class in early 1915. After Jutland, extra armour was added around the barbettes and magazines, increasing maximum displacement to 30380 tons.

Benbow:
Benbow was decommissioned in 1929 and sold for scrapping in March 1931.

Emperor Of India:
Emperor of India was originally to have been named Delhi. She was decommissioned in 1929 and sunk as a target on 1st September 1931. She was raised on 6th February 1932 and scrapped.

Iron Duke:
Iron Duke was converted to a training ship under the Washington Treaty. She was decommissioned in 1929 for conversion. B and Y turrets were removed, as was the belt armour. Several boilers were decommissioned to reduce maximum speed to 18kts. From 1939 she was used as a depot ship at Scapa Flow with all her remaining armament removed. She was sold for scrapping on 2nd March 1946.

Marlborough:
Marlborough was torpedoed at Jutland on 31st May 1916. She kept in line, but was ordered to proceed to Tyneside for repairs when her list prevented the guns being fired. Repairs took three months. She was decommissioned in 1929 and sold for scrapping on 27th June 1932.
