History & Modifications



Vanguard:
Soon after the end of WWII, the 40mm guns in single moutings were removed. In 1947, Vanguard took part in the Royal Tour to South Africa. The STAAG mounting was removed to make way for an observation platform for the Royal party, but replaced after the tour.

She underwent a refit at Devonport between 1947 and 1948, and from late 1949 was used as a training ship at Portsmouth, as well as undertaking flagship duties. She was decommissioned in 1954 at Portsmouth, and was used as a NATO headquarters ship until being sold for scrapping on 9th August 1960.
