The Medeas were smaller editions of the previous Merseys, and were classed as 'third
class cruisers'. They were poor seaboats, and considerably inferior to their
predecessors.
Marathon, Magicienne and Melpomene had their hull sheathed in copper and wood for tropical service. |

The Blakes set the standard for cruiser design for a decade. They were fast and long ranged, but did not meet their design requirements for these functions. |

The Edgars were reduced editions of the Blakes, with the same armament and protection,
but less powerful machinery.
Gibralter, Crescent, Royal Arthur and St. George had their hull sheathed in copper and wood for tropical service. |

The Powerfuls were built to match the Russian cruisers Rossiya and Ryurik. They
were the largest warships in existance at the time, and required much larger crews
than current battleships as stokers.
Both became famous through their crews operations on land in 1899 during the Boer war, and both were refitted between 1902 and 1904. |
