With the vulnerability of the manned bomber to air defences in the 1960s, the British nuclear deterrant was given to ballistic missile submarines as a necessity. The Resolutions were based on the Lafayettes and originally 5 were planned, but this proved unaffordable. In the 1980s, all the missiles were fitted with British Chevaline warheads.

With the decision to buy Trident D5 in the 1980s, new submarines were required to carry it. The Vanguards are the largest British submarines yet built. Although much larger than the Resolutions, the Vanguards have a smaller crew due to increased automation. A pupose built facility at Vickers yard was built for the construction of the submarines.
