History & Modifications

Work on the Porpoises began in 1949, and were the first postwar British submarines. The design was influenced by the Type XXIs.

Oberon Class

Data

History & Modifications

The Oberons are based on the Porpoise, but with minor improvements. The casings were made of fibreglass. All were refitted with new electronics and weapons. They have been a success in the export market with 14 being sold abroad, and they have a reputation for quietness.

Type 2400 Upholder Class

The value of diesel electrics for patrol work, along with delays in the SSN programme and the ageing of the Oberons and Porpoises created a requirement for new conventional submarines.

Although there were intended to be up to 10 of the class built, financial considerations meant that the 4 built would serve less than a year in Royal Navy service. They were mothballed, and then loaned, and eventually sold, to Canada.
