The Oberons are based on the Porpoise, but with minor improvements. The casings were made of fibreglass. All were refitted with new electronics and weapons. They have been a success in the export market with 14 being sold abroad, and they have a reputation for quietness. |

The value of diesel electrics for patrol work, along with delays in the SSN
programme and the ageing of the Oberons and Porpoises created a requirement for
new conventional submarines.
Although there were intended to be up to 10 of the class built, financial considerations meant that the 4 built would serve less than a year in Royal Navy service. They were mothballed, and then loaned, and eventually sold, to Canada. |
