Shannon was originally built with 24000 sq. ft. of sail, but shortly after completion, this was reduced to 21500 sq. ft., and the coal bunkerage increased. Also, the 20pdr guns were added.

In 1883 she was assigned to coastguard duty, and in 1893 she was placed in reserve.
