After the ships cancellation by the Ghanian government, she was completed by Yarrow in
the hope of finding a customer.
Returning from Vietnam in 1976, she collided with and sank the minesweeper Fittleton,
with the loss of several lives. Mermaid spent most of her Royal Navy life as guardship
at Singapore, as she was not sophisticated enough for front line duties.
