Minotaur was to have been named Elephant, but was renamed in 1861. She was first refitted between 1873 and 1875, when her gun fit was altered to 17 x 9" MLR, 2 x 20pdr BL. New boilers were also fitted, along with steam steering gear.

She received a second refit in the early 1880s, when 2 of the 9" guns were replaced by 2 x 6" breech loaders. Between 1891 and 1892, 4 x 4.7" BLR, 8 x 3pdr and 8 machine guns were added, along with 2 torpedo tubes.

In 1904 she was converted to a training ship and renamed Boscawen, and again renamed Ganges in 1906. In 1908 she was renamed Ganges II.
