Northumberland was refitted between 1875 and 1879, when her armament was changed to 7 x 9" MLR, 20 x 8" MLR, 2 x 20pdr BLR and 4 torpedo launchers. The second and fourth masts were also removed.

Between 1885 and 1887, she was again refitted. Two of the 8" guns were replaced by a 1 x 5" BLR and 6" BLR. Six 4.7" BLR were also added.

She was renamed TS Acheron in 1904 and used as a training ship. In 1909 she was converted to a coal hulk, and renamed C68 in 1926.
