History & Modifications
All boats:
All the class were fitted to fire Mk24 Tigerfish torpedoes in 1970. All were refitted with the Type
2007 flank array replacing the Type 186.
Oberon:
Oberon was decommissioned on 10th October 1986. In 1987 she was sold to Seaforth Ship Repairers who
tried, unsuccessfully, as a warship. She was scrapped in 1991.
Ocelot:
Ocelot was given a second refit, the final sonar outfit being made up of Type 2051 suite with Type
2046 towed array and Type 197 intercept. She was sold for scrapping in 1992 but then preserved as a
museum at Chathams Historic Dockyard.
Odin:
Odin was sold for scrapping in 1991.
Olympus:
Olympus was decommissioned on 28th July 1989. She was sold to the Canadian Navy and has been used as a
static training ship at Halifax.
Onslaught:
Onslaught was given a second refit, the final sonar outfit being made up of Type 2051 suite with Type
2046 towed array and Type 197 intercept. She was sold for scrapping in 1991.
Onyx:
Onyx was given a second refit, the final sonar outfit being made up of Type 2051 suite with Type
2046 towed array and Type 197 intercept. She was decommissioned on 14th December 1990. Onyx was the
only conventional British submarine to take part in the Falklands conflict, and has been preserved
at the Historic Warships collection at Birkenhead.
Opportune:
Opportune was given a second refit, the final sonar outfit being made up of Type 2051 suite with Type
2046 towed array and Type 197 intercept. She was decommissioned in 1993 and is laid up at a scrapyard
awaiting disposal.
Opossum:
Opossum was given a second refit, the final sonar outfit being made up of Type 2051 suite with Type
2046 towed array and Type 197 intercept. She was decommissioned in September 1993.
Oracle:
Oracle was given a second refit, the final sonar outfit being made up of Type 2051 suite with Type
2046 towed array and Type 197 intercept. She was decommissioned in July 1993.
Orpehus:
Since decommissioning, Orpehus has been used as a static training boat at HMS Dolphin.
Osiris:
Osiris was given a second refit, the final sonar outfit being made up of Type 2051 suite with Type
2046 towed array and Type 197 intercept. She was decommissioned on 28th July 1989. She was then sold to
the Canadian Navy to provide spares for their Oberon class boats.
Otter:
Otter was given a second refit, the final sonar outfit being made up of Type 2051 suite with Type
2046 towed array and Type 197 intercept. She was decommissioned on 31st July 1991 and sold for
scrapping in 1992 at Portsmouth.
Otus:
Otus was given a second refit, the final sonar outfit being made up of Type 2051 suite with Type
2046 towed array and Type 197 intercept. She was decommissioned in April 1991 and sold for scrapping
in 1992. She is currently laid up at a scrapyard awaiting disposal.
