The Encalada was one of the 'Elswick cruisers', and based on the Japanese cruiser Yoshino. She was well armed for their time, but had very high fuel consumption at speed. |

Like the Encalada, the O'Higgins was designed by Sir Philip Watts. Unusually, she had a wood and copper sheathed hull. Seeing no action she had a long life, and saw out her career as a headquarters ship. |

Chacabuco was another of Sir Philip Watts designs. She was built as a private design, and purchased by Chile. She was based on the Japanese cruiser Takasago. |
