Derfflinger was raised in August 1939 and as the Admiralty had repossessed salvage gear that was on loan to the salvors, she was moored upside down off Rysa Island. During an air raid on Scapa Flow, the battleship Iron Duke was badly damaged, and only saved by Derfflingers salvage crew.

She was towed to a scrapyard on the Clyde and scrapped in 1946.
