Emden made 9 training cruisers before WW2. In April 1940 she took part in the invasion of Norway. In 1941, during the invasion of Russia, she bombarded shore batteries in the Baltic.

In 1944 she had her armament replaced. In September oof that year, she was sent to the Skagerrak to support destroyer operations. On the 9th she ran agound in Oslofjord, and arrived at Konigsberg for repirs on 25th December.

Repairs were halted due to the advancing Russians, and she left harbour on 23rd January 1945. On 13th April she was hit by a bomb and had to be beached off Heikendorferbucht. Her crew were sent ashore and on 3rd May she was deliberatly wrecked by explosives.
