Like Lutzow, consideration was given to selling Seydlitz to Russia, but Hitler prevented this. Work was stopped in June 1942, when she was almost complete. In 1943, Hitler ordered that she be converted into an aircraft carrier, and she arrived at Konigsberg on 2nd April 1944 for work to begin.

With the worsening situation, the only work that was done was to remove most of the superstructure, and she was scuttled before the advancing Russians could capture her.

She was apparantly scrapped there after the war, but a British reconnaissance aircraft may have seen her being towed to Leningrad in October 1946.

Back. Back.
