The original requirement was for eight 6000 ton Hamburg derivatives with Olympus gas turbines and Tartar SAM. The names assigned were Bremen, Dusseldorf, Kiel, Mainz, Munchen, Saarbrucken, Stuttgart and Wiesbaden.

History & Modifications



All ships:
During their refits the Tartar missiles were removed and replaced by a combination of Standard SM1 SAM and Harpoon SSM both firing through the Mk13 launcher. Two RAM CIWS were added.

Lutjens:
Lutjens was originally DDG28 Tolman. She was refitted by Howaldswerke at Kiel between 1984 and 1986. She is in service with the German Navy.

Molders:
Molders was originally DDG29 Henry A. Wiley. She was refitted by Howaldswerke at Kiel between 1982 and 1984. She is in service with the German Navy.

Rommel:
Rommel was originally DDG30 Shea. She wasrefitted by Howaldswerke at Kiel between 1983 and 1985. She was decommissioned on 30th June 1999.
