Preussen was refitted between 1889 and 1890 at the Imperial Dockyard, Wilhelmshaven. She served as a guard ship until 1891. In November 1896 she was stationed at Wilhelmshaven as a harbour ship. On 12th November 1903 she was renamed Saturn to release the name.

From 1907 she was used as a coal hulk for torpedo boats, carrying a total of 5000 tons of coal.
