Deirdre was built as a replacement for the Ton class minesweepers. She was to have longer range and be a more seaworthy ship for work in the Atlantic. Deirdre became the prototype for the later Emers.


Emer Class

After evaluating Deirdre for 3 years, Emer was ordered in 1975. Experience with P20 showed a need for more engine power, better crew accomodation and improved silencing.


Eithne Class

Eithne was built as a long range fisheries patrol ship, intended to be at sea for up to 19 days. Originally 4 were planned, but budget restrictions prevented this. She is the first Irish ship to carry a helicopter.
