The Totis were Italys first postwar submarines and were intended for coastal work. They are comparable with the German Type 205s. Although small, they were well equipped with modern sensors.

Type 1081 Nazario Sauro Class

The Sauros were a result of a requirement for a much larger boat than the Totis, with long range and habitability as requirements. The first 2 were ordered in 1967, but financial problems led to their cancellation, and they were reordered in 1972.

The second pair were ordered in 1976, and cnstruction was delayed due to defective batteries, which were replaced by Swedish made units.

The Pelosis are enlarged Sauros that are capable of firing SubHarpoon.

Primo Longobardo Class

The Longobardos are enlarged Pelosis, with improved weapon stowage, sensors and range.
