Kongo
Japans first battlecruisers were based on the British battleship Erin and designed by Sir George Thurston. The first ship was built in a British yard, with the rest constructed in Japanese yards. All were reconstructed in the inter-war periods.

Amagi Class

Akagi
Amagi
Atago
Takao
The Amagis were based on the Tosa class battleships, but were larger and faster. The whole class was cancelled by the Washington Treaty, but Amagi was converted into an aircraft carrier. Whilst still under construction, the hull of Amagi was destroyed by an earthquake.
