Fuji Yashima |
In 1885 China acquired 2 German battleships. As a result, the Japanese built the 2 Fujis, based on the British Royal Sovereign class. |
|
Ashai Hatsuse Shikishima |
The Shikishimas were based on the British Majestic class. Protection was increased with a double bottom and 261 watertight compartments. |
|
Kashima Katori |
The Kashimas were well armed and protected, following the trend of heavier secondary armament. |
| Mikasa |
Mikasa was the last battleship of the 1896 naval expansion programme. The design
was based on the Shikishimas, but with better protection due to Krupps Cemented
armour replacing Harvey nickel steel.
Mikasa is the only predreadnought to survive to the present day. |
|
Aki Satsuma |
The Satsumas would have been the first all big gun battleships. They were planned with 12 x 12" guns, but there were not enough available, and 12 x 10" guns supplanted 8 of the 12". |
