Two of this class, F812 Pieter Florisz and F813 Witte de With, were sold to Greece while under construction, and were replaced with ships of the same number, and one with the same name, as the Jacob van Heemskerck class.

The Karel Doormans are intended as a replacement for the van Speijk class frigates. They are armed primarily for antisubmarine work, but can also act as air defence ships.
